The impetus for this project came from a previous project in which the goal was to illustrate a map of a city comprised of individual smaller drawings. These “doodles” were to depict key features of that place, including sightseeing attractions, historic sites, buildings, and natural landmarks. I was fortunate enough to randomly choose San Francisco, a city I’ve always wanted to visit, especially now after having researched and drawn so many of its unique points of interest. From the Golden Gate bridge and China Town, to San Francisco’s various museums and parks to its quirky neighborhoods like the Castro and the Presidio, perched atop some fantastically steep hills. Equipped with my drawings to “lay out” the city, I then used my design skills to manipulate the images along with type and text to lay-out a magazine article describing travel to this wonderful city. Hopefully I’ve been able to convey some of the sentiment captured in this quote by Patrick Geddes, “…a city is more than a place in space, it is a drama in time”.
